Statement on Calling Time campaign following progress at the BBC Radio 5Live summit this morning
Richard Lloyd, Which? executive director, said:
“Today we launched the next phase of our Calling Time campaign because consumers are sick and tired of being bombarded with nuisance calls and texts.
“The current system is failing the public and given the scale of this problem, it’s time for the Government to step in.
“We are encouraged by the news today – in direct response to our calls, from John Whittingdale MP, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, that they will have a special meeting to look into this. And, in a further victory for our campaign, we welcome the commitment from the ICO that they will look at a time limit on using peoples’ personal data and also the point at which they take action against companies found breaking the rules.
“We urgently need a new approach, new laws and new technology to tackle this scourge on people’s lives. People must be put back in control of their personal data.”
