Which? responds as CMA directs Facebook to sell Giphy

Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said:

“Leaving Meta and other tech giants unchecked to acquire smaller businesses could restrict consumer choice, stifle innovation and raise costs for rival companies, which would be passed on to customers, so it is positive that the CMA has intervened to block this merger.

“However, current measures to investigate mergers remain inadequate for assessing whether a large tech company buying a smaller one will be harmful.  Providing the CMA with stronger powers, including a bespoke merger regime for the largest tech companies, would ensure swift action could be taken against companies that stifle competition, and could stimulate economic growth by encouraging greater investment from smaller businesses seeking to compete on more even terms.”
