Which? responds to Pockit research: “Big banks abandoning poorest customers”

Gareth Shaw, Head of Money, Which?, said:
“Our research shows that consumers in the two lowest household income groups rely on cash the most, but these people are struggling to access this vital payment method through the double blow of bank branch and cashpoint closures.
“Banks should make sure they cater to the needs of all their customers and provide suitable alternatives before they shut their doors – and their customers out.”

‘Poorest threatened by move to cashless society,’ study from Which? reveals.
Which? previously revealed that the UK has lost almost two thirds of its bank branches in the last 30 years, leaving a fifth of households now more than three kilometres from their nearest branch.

Which? has recorded every bank branch closure since 2015 and can reveal that over 60 are closing every month, with a total of 3,318 having closed since January 2015.
