Which? response as Ofcom ready to issue fines and penalties against social media firms, MPs told
Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection at Which?, said:
“It’s good that Ofcom looks prepared to issue strong penalties against social media firms that fail in their duty of care to users – as part of plans for the much-needed regulation of online platforms. However, there are a number of areas not covered by the government’s current proposals where consumers are increasingly being harmed online.
“The government must confirm what powers regulators will have to take action against online platforms, particularly where people are losing life-changing sums of money to online scams, unwittingly purchasing unsafe products from online marketplaces and being deceived by fake and misleading reviews.”
